ACCESSIBILITY
We are committed to making our 4×4 tag-along tours as inclusive and accessible as possible. K’gari (Fraser Island) is an incredible destination, and we want to help you experience its natural beauty regardless of your abilities. This page provides information to help you decide if our tours are right for you.
For guests who use a wheelchair, we’re sorry to say that our current tours aren’t able to accommodate wheelchair access due to the nature of the island’s terrain. We’d encourage you to reach out to us directly though, as we’re always looking at ways to be more inclusive and may be able to suggest alternatives or point you toward operators better suited to your needs.
If you use crutches or have an injury or condition affecting your mobility, you may absolutely be able to join us – many guests in this situation have had a wonderful time. We’d just ask that you’re comfortable managing crutches across soft sand for periods of time, and we recommend having a chat with us first so we can talk through the day’s itinerary and make sure it’s the right fit for you.
VEHICLE & TRANSPORTATION ACCESS
Do your 4×4 vehicles have wheelchair access?
Our 4×4 vehicles are not equipped with wheelchair lifts or ramps. However, we can accommodate passengers with limited mobility who are able to transfer into the vehicle with minimal assistance. The vehicles feature:
- High step-up entry (approximately 60cm)
- Fixed seating with seatbelt restraints
If you have mobility concerns, please contact us before booking so we can discuss your specific requirements and arrange any necessary accommodations on a private tour basis.
How accessible are your tag-along tours for people with limited mobility?
Our small group tag-along tours traverse K’gari’s sandy tracks and terrain, which involves:
- Unsealed 4×4 tracks with uneven surfaces
- Optional walks to lookout points and natural attractions
- Beach access at various locations
- Some walking on sand, which can be physically demanding
If you have limited mobility but would like to experience K’gari, private tour options are available via alternative operators.
WHAT OTHERS THINK OF OUR TOURS
SENSORY & NEUROLOGICAL ACCESSIBILITY
How accessible are your tours for visually impaired guests?
Our tag-along tours rely heavily on visual experiences of K’gari’s natural landscape, including driving through rainforest, along beaches, and to scenic lookout points. While our guides provide detailed verbal descriptions throughout the day, some aspects may be less suitable for guests with blindness or low vision.
How accessible are your tours for hearing impaired or deaf guests?
Our guided tours include verbal information, stories, and historical commentary throughout the day. We recognize this may be challenging for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing.
We can provide:
- Written information about tour highlights and locations before and after the tour
- Visual aids and demonstrations during stops
For safety reasons, some activities do require real-time verbal instructions. Hearing-impaired guests are unable to drive our vehicles on tour as all drivers need to be able to take verbal instructions via our 2-way radios in each vehicle. Please contact us to discuss how we can accommodate your needs.
What about guests with sensory sensitivities or neurological processing differences?
K’gari’s natural environment can be rich in sensory input – from vehicle engine noise to sand, sun exposure, and varied terrain. If you have sensory sensitivities or neurological processing difficulties (such as autism spectrum characteristics), please contact us before booking.
We can provide detailed information about our activities so you can make an informed decision.
FOOD & DIETARY REQUIREMENTS
Do you cater for dietary requirements and allergies?
Yes, we cater for a variety of dietary requirements including:
- Vegetarian
- Vegan
- Gluten-free
- Dairy-free
- Nut allergies
- Other specific allergies and dietary preferences
Please clearly specify your dietary requirements when booking, or contact us as soon as possible if requirements change. Note that if you have a severe nut allergy, please inform us in advance so we can ensure proper food handling procedures.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
What environmental factors should I be aware of?
K’gari’s environment has unique conditions to consider:
- Heat & sun exposure: K’gari can be hot and sunny. Bring sunscreen, hat, and plenty of water
- Sand: Fine sand is prevalent and can be uncomfortable for some people; wear appropriate footwear
- Insects: Mosquitoes and sandflies are present, especially near water. Bring insect repellent
- Vehicle movement: Tours involve driving on unsealed tracks; the vehicle may experience vibration and jolting
- Dust: Unsealed tracks can create dust; those with respiratory sensitivity should be aware
- Weather: Tours operate in various weather conditions; be prepared for rain, wind, or sudden weather changes
SERVICE ANIMALS ON K’GARI
Service Animal Policy
We welcome certified service animals on our 4×4 tag-along tours. Service animals play an essential role in assisting people with disabilities, and we are committed to accommodating them.
What is a Service Animal?
In Australia, a service animal is a dog that has been specially trained to perform specific tasks to assist a person with a disability. These tasks may include guiding people who are blind or have low vision, alerting to seizures, detecting low blood sugar in people with diabetes, reminding people to take medication, or providing mobility assistance.
Service Animals on K’gari National Park
K’gari is a protected national park with specific regulations. Service animals are permitted on K’gari National Park, provided they:
- Are under your control at all times (on a lead or harness)
- Do not disturb wildlife
- Are not permitted in certain sensitive areas as designated by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service
- Are kept away from nesting areas and bird colonies
- Are exercised responsibly to minimize impact on the environment
Before Your Tour
If you are traveling with a service animal, please inform us at the time of booking. This helps us ensure:
- Adequate space in the 4×4 vehicle for your service animal
- Planned stops that accommodate your animal’s needs
- Compliance with K’gari National Park regulations
- A comfortable experience for all tour participants
IMPORTANT: Pet dogs are not permitted on K’gari National Park. Only certified service animals are allowed. If you have a pet dog, you will not be able to bring it on this tour. Please arrange alternative care for your pet before your visit.
Traveling with Your Service Animal
During your tour, we recommend:
- Bringing adequate water and food for your service animal
- Packing any necessary medications or health supplies
- Informing your guide of any specific needs or behavioral triggers
- Keeping your animal cool and comfortable during the day (our vehicles have limited air conditioning on hot days)
